Running Up for Air | Patagonia Films
A Journey from Solo Effort to Global Movement
In 2012, Jared Campbell embarked on a mission to run up and down Salt Lake City’s Grandeur Peak for 24 hours, aiming to raise awareness and funds for air quality advocacy. What began as a solo project quickly evolved into Running Up For Air (RUFA), a global movement. Over 11 years, it has expanded to include dozens of races, hundreds of runners, and tens of thousands of dollars raised. The documentary vividly captures the stark reality of air pollution in Salt Lake City, illustrating the visible smog from the peak.
Campbell’s personal story is a central theme of the film. Having lost several family members to cancer in his early 20s, he was driven by a desire to combat air pollution, particularly as he started his own family. The documentary effectively conveys his passion and commitment to improving air quality, making it clear how deeply personal and urgent this cause is for him.
The Power of Community and Global Impact
“Running Up for Air” underscores the incredible power of community and collective effort. The film showcases the growing number of participants, with over 300 people now taking part in the annual event. The cinematography beautifully captures the camaraderie and shared determination among the runners, highlighting how this event has built a strong, supportive community around a common goal.
In 2023, Jared and 670 runners collectively achieved 5.2 million vertical feet across six RUFA events. The movement has also gained international traction, with virtual events in Europe attracting over 58,000 participants. To date, RUFA events have raised 482 thousand dollars for air quality initiatives, demonstrating the significant impact of this grassroots effort.
The documentary is not just about running; it’s about mobilising a global community to tackle a critical environmental issue. It’s a powerful reminder of how individual efforts can inspire widespread change, and how communities can come together to address global challenges.
